Losing heat is stressful, and what you check first in North York depends on your system type — a house furnace, a VRF unit in a Willowdale condo, or a multi-zone system in a larger York Mills-area home.

If You’re in a House

  • Thermostat — is it set to Heat, and is the target temperature above the current room reading? Check batteries if it’s battery-powered.
  • Breaker panel — has a breaker tripped for the furnace circuit?
  • Furnace switch — many furnaces have a wall switch near the unit that looks like an ordinary light switch. Easy to bump off in a basement.

If You’re in a Condo

Check whether it’s a building-wide issue first — ask a neighbour or check the building’s resident portal. If it’s isolated to your unit, check your indoor unit’s own filter and look for an error code on the display or remote before assuming it’s a building system failure.

If You’re in a Larger Multi-Zone Home

Confirm whether the issue affects the whole house or just one zone. A single zone losing heat while others are fine usually points to that specific unit or its thermostat, not the whole system — check the breaker and thermostat for that zone specifically before assuming a full system failure.

Check the Filter

A severely clogged filter can cause a furnace or air handler to overheat and shut itself down as a safety measure, regardless of system type. If it’s visibly caked with dust, replace it and see if the system restarts.

Look for an Error Code

Most modern furnaces, VRF units, and multi-zone systems display some form of fault code. Photograph or note it before you call — it tells a technician exactly what’s being reported, which speeds up the visit considerably.

What Not to Do

Don’t take apart any unit cabinet, don’t reset the system repeatedly hoping it “catches,” and don’t attempt any gas line, refrigerant, or ignition work yourself. These components should only be handled by a properly licensed technician.

When to Call

If you’ve ruled out a building-wide issue (for condos) or isolated the affected zone (for larger homes) and the system still won’t run — or you smell gas at any point — stop troubleshooting and call immediately.

Our dispatcher is available 24/7, and a technician can typically be on-site within 60 minutes anywhere in North York.
